Send your child to Camp Rosenbaum!

Camp Rosenbaum 2022
Sunday July 24th - Friday July 29th 2022

Apply on the Home Forward Portal

Camp Rosenbaum invites you to send your child to our Youth Citizenship Camp!  Housing authorities throughout Oregon and SW Washington, along with the Oregon National Guard and the Portland Police Bureau, have partnered to create a summer camp for 9 ½ - 11-year-old kids who live in subsidized housing. There is no cost to attend Camp Rosenbaum.

What does Youth Citizenship mean?
Camp Rosenbaum defines citizenship for youth from a socially constructed model of participation, being empowered, and to share a sense of belonging to one’s community.  The camp’s goal is to help children develop positive traits and behaviors that benefit themselves and their community through daily “Good Citizenship” themes like working together, being fair, sharing, caring, and loyalty.

What is Camp Rosenbaum?
Camp Rosenbaum is a week-long summer camp, located at Camp Rilea on the Oregon Coast near Warrenton, Oregon. We provide children with fun and positive activities like: leather projects, arts and crafts, nature walks, time at the beach, and a field trip to either Fort Clatsop or the Maritime Museum. We also have supervised sports, movies, fishing, and horseback riding.

Children who attend camp will be carefully supervised and receive a great deal of individual time and attention from our volunteer staff who come from the Oregon National Guard, housing authority partners, law enforcement agencies like the Portland Police and other emergency response public workers. It is important to know that police officers and military personnel fill many positions at camp, and some will be visible in uniform during the week. At the end of camp, they will spend the last day in uniform which is meant to be a surprise for the kids. Please use your best judgement to prepare your campers.

Each child will receive camp clothing, including a sweatshirt and t-shirt. They will also bring home the items that they make in leather, arts and crafts, and science. The children are served three nutritious meals a day, and there are birthday celebrations for everyone who has a birthday during the week.

Can my child attend?
There is no cost to attend Camp Rosenbaum. Camp Rosenbaum is open to children who live in low-income housing and are between 9 ½ and 11 years old. This means your child must have been born between July 21, 2010 and February 1, 2013. Because we can only accept a limited number of children, children who have attended Camp Rosenbaum in the past will not be accepted.

A pre-camp physical is not needed, but it is very important that your child is able to participate in a very active camp schedule. The camp is not designed for children who require accommodations for many disabilities, as we are not staffed to provide all needed services. Also note that children must be free of lice and nits in order to attend Camp Rosenbaum. Although they will be checked by our medical staff before going to their bunks, parents should also prepare.

Children are not required to have vaccinations to attend Camp Rosenbaum but it is highly encouraged. If your child has been exposed to COVID-19 within 10 days, is displaying symptoms, or tests positive for COVID-19 within 10 days of camp, they will be unable to attend. Every child and staff member will be tested for COVID-19 by our medical staff prior to boarding the bus for Camp.

Camp Rosenbaum staff and board members are committed to creating a fun and learning environment conductive to the overall development and social emotional health and well-being of all our campers. At Camp Rosenbaum, we make it clear: all children will be respected for their gender identities. If you would like to learn more about how Camp Rosenbaum supports non-binary and transgender participants, please
